In 2012 the oil and gas industry in the United Kingdom produced 50 million cubic meters of petroleum, of which 98% was produced from offshore fields. Almost all UK oil and gas production comes from offshore, where there is a network of 14,000 km of pipelines linking 107 oil platforms, 181 gas platforms and a large number of sub sea installations. There are 383 producing offshore fields, including 17 which started production in 2008.From the late 1970s to the early 2000s, the United Kingdom was a major exporter of oil and gas. The UK is now a net importer of oil and gas.
